What are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins such as botulinum toxin type A were discovered in 1946. This toxin is a complex protein made from the bacteria clostridium botulinium. In 1980 Dr. Jean Carruthers from Vancouver discovered that his patients when treated for blepharospasm were left with practically no expression lines between their eyebrows. Neurotoxins were then used to treat muscle spasms in the face when a fantastic side effect was observed. Patients were left with fewer wrinkles in the skin overlying the treated muscles in the facial area. Physicians began using neurotoxins for cosmetic purposes, and in 1997 when they were first approved by the FDA in the US for cosmetic use. In 2001 Health Canada approved the use of neurotoxins for the expression lines between the eyebrows. By 2005, forehead lines, crow’s feet and many more areas are approved for use in Canada.

How do Neurotoxins work?

For cosmetic applications, a powder form of the neurotoxin is mixed with saline at extremely low concentrations and injected into the muscle just beneath the surface of the skin. When a muscle contracts, nerves release the neurotransmitter acetylcholine at the junction where the nerve cell meets the muscle cell. Acetylcholine acts a chemical messenger, attaching to the muscle cell and telling the muscle to shorten, or contract. Neurotoxins interfere with this communication by preventing the nerve cell from releasing acetylcholine. When the muscle cell contracts less, it becomes less stiff, and the overlying skin appears smoother. Using neurotoxins for cosmetic procedures generally takes up to 2 weeks for the full effect to be observed and results typically last up to 4 months. It is now the most popular minimally invasive non-surgical cosmetic treatment carried out in North America and continues to grow rapidly due to its success, with over 6 million treatments each year.
