Questions about Laser Hair Removal?

Home 9 Treatments 9 Questions about Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal has become a popular option for eliminating unwanted body hair. It saves time, and effort, and can be a long-term solution compared to shaving or waxing, but it requires a serious commitment. Here are some common questions about Laser Hair Removal.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal uses a focused beam of light that targets the pigment in hair follicles, disrupting the hair’s growth cycle. The laser bypasses the epidermis, travels straight to the papilla at the bottom of the follicle, and sparks the burst of light energy to disable hair growth at the root.

How Much Does It Cost?

The price varies depending on the treatment area. Small areas like the upper lip can cost as little as $80 per session, while larger areas like the legs can run between $500 and $700 per session. Payment plans and package deals can make it more affordable over time.

Is It Painful?

Pain is subjective, but some areas, like the underarms and bikini line, can be more sensitive than others. People often describe the sensation like the snap of a tiny rubber band. Newer laser technologies with built-in cooling systems can help minimize discomfort, such as the ND-YAG Laser.

Is It Safe for Dark Skin?

Yes, laser hair removal is now safe for all skin tones. Technological advances, such as the ND-YAG laser, allow for the safe treatment of dark skin without damaging the epidermis. It’s important to verify that the clinic or medical spa you choose has the appropriate equipment for your skin type. A great consultation is very important.

Is It Permanent?

Laser hair removal is intended to reduce hair growth, not eliminate 100% of all follicles. Most people experience significantly less hair after six to eight sessions, but some maintenance may be needed over time. Hormone fluctuations play a big part in the success of laser hair removal.

How Many Sessions Are Required?

Results can appear after two to three sessions, but complete hair reduction typically requires six to eight sessions spaced about six weeks apart. The number of treatments depends on hair thickness and the area being treated.

Are There Side Effects?

The procedure is generally safe with minimal side effects, such as redness or irritation, which typically subside within a few hours or days.

Can You Get Laser Hair Removal While Pregnant?

It’s recommended to consult your doctor if you’re pregnant. While most areas can be treated, the bikini line and abdomen are usually avoided during pregnancy due to lack of research on potential contraindications.

How to Prepare for Treatment

Avoid sun exposure and self-tanners before your session, especially if you’re getting treated in the spring or summer. Shave the treatment area prior to your appointment and discontinue the use of retinoids or antibiotics a few days before your appointment. Dry shaving is best and gently to avoid razor burn and cuts before your treatment.

What Happens During the Appointment?

For smaller areas like underarms, the treatment is quick—around 10 minutes. Larger areas like the legs can take up to 30 minutes. Depending on the area, you may need to expose or partially remove clothing.

What’s the Aftercare?

After treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, and workouts for a day. You can shave between sessions; however, try and limit the number of times between laser appointments. Never wax or tweeze as these methods interfere with the laser’s ability to target the hair follicle. The laser light needs the pigment from the hair to travel to the bottom of the hair follicle to destroy.

When Is the Best Time to Start?

While spring is when many think about laser hair removal, fall or winter is the best time to begin, as sun exposure can affect results.

At-Home Laser Hair Removal

At-home devices are a more affordable option but are less powerful than professional lasers. These devices are effective at reducing hair growth, but multiple treatments are required, and the results won’t be as quick or long-lasting as in-spa treatments. I can also be difficult to inflict discomfort to yourself.

Laser hair removal can be a game-changer for removing and reducing unwanted hair, but it’s important to do your research and check reviews to ensure the best results after all it’s an investment in yourself.
